The Foundation of AgriVogue

Soh-jung (Lauren) Yoo brings rich experience in and a wealth of insight on international trade and commerce as a career journalist that spans over a decade.

“AgriVogue Consulting aims to bring a wind of change to the current practice of agri-food trade between North America and South Korea.”

She gained her expertise on South Korea and its relation to the Asian and Western economies as the trade, commerce, agriculture, and retail reporter at The Korea Herald, the leading English daily in South Korea. She covered the country’s high-profile epoch-making moments in the area of international trade, such as Korea’s FTA negotiations with the European Union and the United States.

Soh-jung interviewed CEOs of multinational and domestic firms of all sizes in a wide range of industries, as well as policy makers, such as former Korean Minister for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Chang Tae-pyong. Her journalism career placed her in the nooks and crannies of Korean society and the world of business, giving her exceptional insight on South Korea.

Soh-jung’s articles on Korea’s international trade issues and developments, consumer trends, and agriculture policies have been widely picked up by various public and private institutions all over the world. They have also been quoted by news sources, academic journals, and research publications worldwide.

“We want to provide our special system and insight to help unlock existing and latent opportunities, while making the trade process more efficient for prospective clients.”

Soh-jung’s perceptiveness toward American and Canadian cultural values stems from her upbringing in Canada. Currently based in Vancouver, B.C., she is serving as the principal correspondent for the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Korea, allowing her to bridge Eastern and Western issues. She continues to share her voice on socio-cultural, political, economic, and global issues with Korea as one of the program-monitoring members of Arirang TV, Korea’s global broadcasting network.

Background

Born in Seoul, Soh-jung first set foot on Canadian soil with her parents and older sister when she was two years old. She was raised in Edmonton, Alberta and graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in English Literature.

Yoo is fluent in English and Korean, while she has some knowledge of French, Japanese, and Chinese. Her bilingual background allowed her to pursue a master’s degree in Korean Language and Linguistics at Sangmyung University in Seoul on full scholarship right after her undergraduate program.

Yoo’s passion for words and cultures led her to land a position as a reporter at The Korea Herald. Years of being a business reporter kindled her interest in the dynamics of international trade, and its indispensable role in both the global economy and fulfilling consumer needs and wants. To satiate this appetite, she relocated to Canada in late 2010 to enroll in the International Trade Diploma program offered by the Forum for International Trade Training, the certification and accreditation body for international trade practitioners based in Ottawa, Ontario. Yoo received her diploma in August 2011.

With her background and professional experience, Yoo founded AgriVogue Consulting Inc. in April 2012 in aims to bring a wind of change to the current practice of agri-food trade between North America and South Korea.

“There is so much opportunity for North America-South Korea agri-food trade that is waiting to be tapped – and that’s why I have founded AgriVogue,” Yoo says. “You just need the right approach and the right eye. We want to provide our special system and insight to help unlock existing and latent opportunities, while making the trade process more efficient for prospective clients.”

The agriculture enthusiast enjoys cooking and trying different foods. She also enjoys writing, playing the violin, and observing nature, which includes the world of agriculture. She is also a translator, and her project to translate an anthology of Korean poems into English was published in July 2014.
